Tax Refund Calculator (2026 Tax Year)

Estimate your federal refund in seconds. Results appear on this page — no email, no phone number, no payment.

    The short answer

How much will my tax refund be?

Your federal refund is the tax withheld from your pay minus your actual 2026 federal tax liability, which is calculated on income after the standard deduction and reduced by credits such as the Child Tax Credit.

This estimator fits W-2 employees taking the standard deduction. Itemizers, business owners, and multi-state filers should confirm with a licensed preparer.

    How this is calculated

    Figures used: 2026 tax year

Taxable income equals gross income minus the 2026 standard deduction for your filing status. Federal tax is then computed bracket by bracket: each slice of taxable income is taxed at that bracket's rate, not your whole income at your top rate.

Non-refundable credits are applied after tax is computed. This tool applies the Child Tax Credit at $2,200 per qualifying child under 17 and does not let credits push tax below zero. Your refund is federal tax withheld minus tax after credits.

Not modeled: itemized deductions, state income tax, the Earned Income Tax Credit, education credits, capital gains rates, the Additional Medicare Tax, and self-employment tax. If any apply, your real result will differ.

taxable = max(0, gross income − standard deduction)
tax = Σ (income in bracket × bracket rate)
    tax after credits = max(0, tax − 2,200 × children)
refund = federal withholding − tax after credits

    Frequently asked questions

How does a tax refund calculator work?

It estimates your total federal tax for the year, then subtracts what you already paid through withholding and credits. If your payments exceed your tax, the difference is your estimated refund; if not, it is the balance you owe.

What tax year does this calculator use?

This calculator uses 2026 tax-year federal brackets, standard deduction amounts, and the Child Tax Credit. It does not model state income tax, itemized deductions, or every credit, so treat the result as an estimate.

Why is my refund smaller than last year?

The most common reasons are a change in withholding on Form W-4, higher income pushing part of your earnings into a higher bracket, losing a dependent credit, or added self-employment income that had no tax withheld during the year.

How fast does the IRS issue refunds?

Most e-filed returns with direct deposit are refunded within about 21 days. Paper returns generally take six weeks or longer. Returns claiming certain credits can be held for additional review before the refund is released.

Do I need to enter an email to see my refund estimate?

No. This calculator shows your estimated refund immediately on the page. Nothing is required — no email address, no phone number, and no payment — and you can change the inputs as many times as you like.

What if I owe money instead of getting a refund?

You can pay the balance directly to the IRS, or set up an online payment agreement. If the amount you owe is $10,000 or more and you cannot pay it, a licensed tax resolution professional can review relief options with you.

Does this calculator include state taxes?

No. It estimates federal income tax only. State income tax rules vary widely, and nine states levy no broad income tax at all, so a state estimate has to be run separately using your own state's rates.

    Owe the IRS instead?

If this estimate shows a balance due that you cannot pay, relief programs exist — installment agreements, penalty abatement, and in some cases an Offer in Compromise. Start with the answer hub below.
